You can take use two train stations: Torremolinos on the main square and Montemar on top of the hill opposite La Carihuela. Both stations are on the C1 Malaga Cercanias Line. It takes about 10-15 minutes to walk to them. Unfortunately, both are uphill. Malaga Airport is also on the C1 Malaga Cercanias line so there is an excellent connection.
Spanish trains are reliable and very cheap. If you would like to visit the centre of Malaga, get off at “Malaga Centro Alameda” which is near “El Cortes Ingles” accross the river from the old town and cathedral. “Malaga Maria Zambrano” is the large train station which connects Malaga with other Spanish cities.
